Feline purr-formers strut their stuff at talon show

IT was not a customary beauty contest but the talons were definitely out, just the same.

And the contestants were hoping for that purr-fect look as they paraded for the judges at yesterday's 59th Championship Cat Show in Knocklyon, Co Dublin.

A far-reaching variety of pedigree and some more run-of-the-mill household cats were hoping for that coveted rosette as they and their owners ensured they were preened and pimped to idealization.

"One person entered 10 cats, which is unbelievable -- 136 cats took part in total so it was a great day all vicinity," said Tony Forshaw, chairman of the Siamese and All Breeds Cat Club of Ireland .

"A lot of them are bred in Ireland but an ugly lot of the parents would have started out in Eastern European countries such as Poland.

"They are basically judged on their looks. Everything from the shape of their heads, eye dye a flag, coat length, coat colour, length of head -- everything is taken into account,'' he explained.

With its gimlet eyes and flinty grey hair, one feline in particular -- a Blue British Shorthair -- proved a big hit with the assembled moggy lovers. Up to 1,000 people poured through the gates at Knocklyon Community Concentrate to marvel at the quality of pedigree cats on show, such as Siamese, Birman, Bengal, Abyssinian, Singapura, Ragdolls and Sphynx.
